Spam to soar as Srizbi re-emerges

After a short period of relative calm, spam levels are set to increase dramatically as the Srizbi botnet makes its return.

The lull in spam email activity which was noted following the shutdown of the McColo web hosting company is set to end as reports indicate that the infamous botnet has been brought back online.

According to Vnunet.com, the malware network comprises approximately 500,000 computers and is thought to be responsible for two-fifths of all spam sent globally.

"In the coming days, many journalists and researchers will ask how it is possible that the largest botnet in the world was allowed to update itself, when a security firm had near complete control over it," stated network security researchers cited by the website.

A host of email security solutions vendors have identified Srizbi as the most prolific botnet in the world, with figures showing that it is more preponderant than many other headline bots such as Storm and Bobax, also known as Hacktool.Spammer.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18902176-ADNFCR
