Antivirus software heads to the sky

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

A growing number of antivirus software vendors are looking to cloud computing in the fight against malicious online threats.

Using complex web filters, the cloud-based services run network security checks offsite and run continual tests to establish whether systems are under threat, vnunet.com reports.

According to the site, the preference towards new online services are indicative of a new approach to combating computer viruses and other forms of malware.

It reports that with a burgeoning number of online threats, antivirus products need to be able to respond in a pre-emptive and less reactive manner.

While it is doubtful that cloud-based services will do away with traditional updates to boost local antivirus filters, many researchers are convinced that by running online checks vendors will be able to respond more quickly as new threats emerge.

In an earlier report, vnunet.com also reported that one of the major benefits of cloud computing is that it frees up resources and increases functionality. ADNFCR-1765-ID-18771610-ADNFCR
