Spam drops after McColo shut down

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Spam mail levels dropped significantly immediately following hosting provider McColo being shut down, it has been reported.

Industry news source vnunet explains that figures indicate a "significant slice" of spam mails received worldwide may have originated from McColo's servers.

However, there may still be a need for spam blocker software in light of the fact that levels of spurious email have increased in the days after the shutdown.

The article claims that a drop of between 40 and 75 percent in spam levels was witnessed by security experts worldwide.

MX Logic itself witnessed a 50 percent drop in spam mail levels in immediate response to McColo being taken offline.

Figures published on the firm's IT Security blog showed that spurious mail levels dropped by half at around 13:00 MST on November 11th.

"This represents the first time that we have seen immediate, significant, measurable reductions in spam volume as a result of a spammer arrest or registrar/colocation termination," a representative commented.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18874487-ADNFCR
