White House declares October national cybersecurity awareness month

Monday, October 5, 2009

In light of growing threats to national security from cyber terrorists and criminal organizations, the Obama administration has declared October as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, drawing attention to internet security threats such as malware.

The administration is seeking to shore up defenses against online threats at a time when the government is understaffed and lacks a coordinated approach to handling cyber threats. The Department of Homeland Security announced last week that the agency plans to hire up to 1,000 IT professionals over the next three years.

In a proclamation, President Obama stated that individuals, businesses and governments have a responsibility to work together to improve cybersecurity.

"We all must practice safe computing to avoid attacks," the proclamation said. "A key measure of our success will be the degree to which all Americans educate themselves about the risks they face and the actions they can take to protect themselves and our Nation's digital infrastructure."

Throughout October, DHS and its public and private sector partners will promote efforts to educate citizens on guarding against cyber threats at home, work and school.
