VoIP calls can be tapped

Businesses implementing the latest telecoms technology could be putting themselves at risk of network security breaches, it has been claimed. Ross Woodham, a solicitor and commercial specialist writing for shoosmiths.co.uk, said that while there are several advantages to putting Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems in place, there are also drawbacks. One such potential problem flagged up by Mr Woodham is the network security issues associated with online systems. He stated: "Just as traditional phone calls can be tapped, so can VoIP calls." Mr Woodham went on to say users of online telecoms services are allowing their data to be passed through numerous networks, some of which may not be known or trusted. He claimed this could result in phone calls made from a PC being "tapped, analyzed or hacked." Earlier this month, an Ottawa-based firm warned media stream attacks could hit communications servers and popular internet utilities such as Windows Messenger.
