A lack of awareness about security software such as antivirus products and web filters is leaving PC and laptop users wide open to attack, it has been claimed.
A new study cited by MarketWatch has found that more than ten per cent of users in the US and the UK currently have no antivirus products installed, while nine per cent said they were unsure if they had such protection or not.
Meanwhile, 46 per cent said they thought the level of protection installed was inadequate to protect data security breaches.
Furthermore, more than half (52 per cent) said they were unsure what security settings were in place to protect them while web browsing.
Elsewhere, Wired has noted that one of the most important steps in improving email security is to improve screening habits, avoiding any unsolicited emails and all executable files.
It explained that email is the number one vector for the transmission of computer viruses, phishing scams and various forms of malware.
