The hackers are not winning

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

One of the most common myths propagated by businesses analyzing enterprise network security is that hackers are winning the battle against secure computing, Gartner has claimed.

The research firm also noted that another common fallacy is that the number of data security breaches is increasing as outside threats become more complex.

Meanwhile, many businesses also see security tools - such as web filters or firewalls - as inhibitors to business progression, the company claimed.

"The security department must become adept at identifying the real threats to ensure that security becomes an enabler for business innovation, rather than an inhibitor," warned Eric Ouellet, research vice-president at Gartner.

He said that furthering this, network security teams need to operate in a proactive manner and not simply react to the threats they face.

In other developments, Gartner has also recently insisted that in the Asia-Pacific region, IT spending is being driven by data security concerns, not the need to meet regulatory compliance standards for data protection.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18792790-ADNFCR
