Lack of hardening tops SME mistakes

Monday, September 22, 2008

Connecting computers to the internet before "hardening" them with antivirus products and web filters is the most common mistake made by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) when it comes to compromising network security.

According to the UK-based National Computing Centre, firms need to make sure that antivirus protection and spyware detection tools are in place before an Ethernet cable goes anywhere near a computer.

Meanwhile, SMEs were also advised to make sure that all default settings and passwords were changed before connecting to reduce the risk of having network security compromised by hackers.

"Leaving the default accounts and passwords makes it all the more easy for a hacker to gain access to your network. Change passwords and delete/rename default accounts immediately," the centre urged.

In a separate article, the group also advise those firms looking to pursue virtualization to think of the migration process as a natural extension of their technological development strategy, rather than a step change taken for immediate cost reductions.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18790607-ADNFCR
