IT workers see smaller raises

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Professionals in the information technology field saw much smaller raises this year than in previous years, as the recession hit industries across the board. The median salary for IT staff was $80,000 in total compensation and $105,000 for managers, according to the latest salary survey published by InformationWeek.

Median total raises were just 0.7 percent for staff and 1.6 percent for managers, but workers in some regions fared much better than others, InformationWeek reported.

The survey found that IT workers involved in positions involving network security were among the top-paying jobs in the profession.

"All in all, this is better news for IT professionals than we were expecting," said Art Wittmann, managing director of InformationWeek Analytics. "But we also find that the once believed recession-resistant industries, such as healthcare, aren't immune to the downturn."

IT professionals reported being more worried about their job security, as IT unemployment hit its highest level since 2004. Only 37 percent said their positions were very secure, compared with 51 percent who felt secure the previous year.
