FCC creates cybersecurity working group

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) should play a crucial role in protecting the nation's communications networks from cyberattacks, according to a report released by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.

The report on the FCC's ability to respond to natural disasters, terrorist attacks, public health emergencies and other large-scale events calls for the agency to work with FEMA to determine which public safety communications systems require immediate assistance during emergencies.

A new working group will focus on ways to strengthen cybersecurity for communications infrastructure, Genachowski said.

"The FCC has an important role to play in ensuring that our nation’s communications infrastructure serves our public safety needs," Genachowski said. "Today's report outlines concrete steps the FCC can and will take to better support public safety communications and protect our nation."

Rear Admiral (ret.) Jamie Barnett, chief of the FCC's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, said the FCC has to ensure the capability to respond immediately to a disaster or emergency.

"As this report confirms, preparation will take training, resources and constant vigilance," Barnett said.
