Earth Day brings EarthLink crash

Internet service provider EarthLink suffered an outage on Earth Day yesterday, according to users who posted about the outage on their Twitter accounts.

EarthLink's webmail and web hosting services were not accessible for some users from about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to a report from ComputerWorld.

The cause of the crash was unknown as of late Wednesday, and the company's web page was knocked offline and its phone numbers were disconnected, ComputerWorld reported.

The Atlanta-based ISP, which has about 2.8 million subscribers, did not respond to requests for comment from the web security news website, ComputerWorld wrote.

On the popular Twitter website, users began posting that they had lost access to their EarthLink accounts around 10:30 a.m., when users wrote comments like: "Wake-up call to EarthLink. You may need a Twitter page of your own. We need updates (and your phones aren't working)."

Web hosting provider ooma suffered a similar outage on April 13, which the company blog reported was caused by problems with its Atlanta servers. The company said later it is working to correct issues and improve its response time for customer communications.

Ooma said its outage communications tools will include posting outage notifications by email and Twitter.
