Threat of identity theft shows need for online security

Thursday, November 19, 2009

As Americans live increasingly large portions of their lives on the internet, the possibilities and incentives for remote identity theft increase as well. A report in the New York Times advises caution, and gives tips for constructing an "online bulwark" to prevent theft and fraud.

Private information is present in many different places on the internet, the Times report says. While the sheer amount of private data may help keep individuals safe, it is not a sure thing. Avoiding malware and being strategic about online shopping and other activities that require users to give out personal information can help keep data safe from criminals.

Identity Theft 911, a fraud protection service, says that the holidays can be prime hunting season for identity thieves, with sharp upticks in online shopping and general retail activity - the most productive sources of illicitly obtained personal data. The company also urges shoppers to avoid isolated ATM locations, saying that these are more likely to contain card readers.

Identity Theft 911 and other companies offer a wide variety of services designed to protect the consumer from fraud and abuse of their private information.ADNFCR-1765-ID-19469516-ADNFCR
