FBI disbands identity theft ring

Friday, October 17, 2008

The FBI has announced that it has broken up a 2,500-strong criminal network following a two-year international investigation.

According to the agency, infiltration of the Dark Market ring resulted in the arrest of 56 individuals on charges relating to identity theft and fraud.

The organization served as an illicit trading platform for information such as credit card and account login details.

In addition to the arrests, the FBI also announced that it had prevented $70 million worth of fraudulent purchases made using compromised accounts.

Cyber Division assistant director Shawn Henry commented: "By joining forces with our international law enforcement counterparts, we have been - and will continue to be - successful in arresting those individuals and dismantling these forums."

Earlier this year, the FBI warned businesses and consumers that the Hit Man email phishing scam was continuing to persist, with many reports received where targets had been sent messages purporting to be from hitmen hired to kill them.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18831800-ADNFCR
