Cloud computing security questioned in new report

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

IT security professionals should be looking for ways to evaluate the security and privacy issues raised by cloud computing services, according to a new report from Forrester Research.

The report - How Secure is Your Cloud? - written by analyst Chenxi Wang, said an effective assessment of cloud computing "must cover data protection, compliance, privacy, identity management, secure operations and other related security and legal issues."

Cloud computing, where applications or storage capacity are remotely hosted by web providers, is getting a serious look amid a downturn economy, as organizations increasingly look to improve operational efficiency, Wang wrote. But security and privacy concerns are holding the model back.

One of the security issues raised in the report involves multi-tenancy in data storage, which is rare in traditional IT outsourcing, "is almost a given in cloud computing services," Wang wrote, according to Networkworld.com.

Wang quoted Boeing chief security architect Steve Whitlock as saying the potential benefits do not yet outweigh the security pitfalls. "The community has much work to do to make the cloud a safe place to collaborate," Whitlock said, according to Networkworld.com.
