Phishing scams cash in on bank crisis

Thursday, October 2, 2008

Businesses need to be on the lookout for phishing scams trying to cash in on the current economic crisis gripping the US.

According to JP Morgan, customers using its Chase services have been receiving spam emails from fraudsters trying to commit identity theft and fraud by coaxing users into giving them account information.

The group urged customers to be on the lookout for emails with subjects such as "Mail Alert! Chase Bank XP Upgrade Install problem" and "Chase Bank - Free Download for Upgrade".

Elsewhere, KoMoNews.com has pointed out that with the recent buyout of Washington Mutual, more than 40 million Chase customers could be exposed to the phishing scam.

Meanwhile, UK customers have also been targeted in phishing scams exploiting the concerns about the health of the global economy.

According to the Press Association, spam emails sent to customers with British banks Bradford & Bingley and Halifax have more than tripled in recent weeks amid a slew of buyouts and near-collapses.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18808083-ADNFCR
