Koobface spreading to Myspace

Thursday, December 11, 2008

After spending the past couple of weeks heavily plaguing Facebook users, the Koobface virus is now on a mission for more friends.

Security researchers are reporting the virus is now targeting social networking sites Myspace and Bebo, as well as others, DarkReading.com reports.

The Koobface virus, which was first reported this past August, recently intensified on Facebook with users getting emails from friends about an online video.

With the subject line of "You look so amazing funny on our new video," users are given a link to an online video. If the user attempts to play it, they are asked to download the latest version of Flash player. This is the malicious file.

Once downloaded, Koobface turns the user's machine into zombie computers to form botnets, which in turn begin to spread further through the network. Facebook officials claim to have "again contained" the worm, according to DarkReading.

The resurgence of Koobface comes in a year when cybercriminals have used innovative ways to breach security, specifically with botnets. Security officials have said next year botnets will evolve further and be made to carry out smaller, specific attacks.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18924943-ADNFCR
