Data security strategies are outdated

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Many businesses are putting sensitive information at risk because of outdated perceptions about data security, a new study has claimed.

Carried out by Osterman Research, the poll found that only one in seven organizations are tackling data security issues with a strong policy-based approach.

Highlighting the need for robust email filters, the group found that 47 per cent of employees do not have the ability to send encrypted messages direct from their desktop, while 13 per cent can send encrypted emails automatically through a policy-based data security strategy.

"Companies need to deploy an easy-to-use encryption capability that will allow users to encrypt private content, even content that is only mildly sensitive," said Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research.

Elsewhere, newsfactor.com has also urged businesses to develop an encryption policy in order to govern email security efficiently.

Such strategies should set out who can send encrypted messages and what kind of data needs to be protected in this way, the website advised.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18792783-ADNFCR
