Canada attempts to pass anti-spam bill

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

The Canadian senate is considering an anti-spam bill that would include fines and jail time for spammers, as well as for the businesses that make use of their services, ITBusiness.ca reports.

The bill, known as S-220, and titled An Act Respecting Commercial Electronic Messages (the Anti-Spam Act), would also allow ISPs to deny service to suspected spammers and give users the right to directly sue those sending spam emails.

Senator Yoine Goldstein, the Liberal party member for Rigaud Quebec, submitted the bill and gave the opening speech in the senate on February 5th, according to the article.

"The general goal is to diminish - because one can't eliminate - spam. Spam results in ISPs having to buy more sophisticated equipment to cope with it, it bothers people a great deal, it is starting to inhibit internet commerce and is a vehicle for all sorts of nasty things," Goldstein said during his speech, according to the news provider.

According to the senator, if a user gets a message from "Timbuktu to buy Viagra from a Toronto distributor," the Canadian business mentioned in the spam email would also be responsible under the new law, states the website.ADNFCR-1765-ID-19029844-ADNFCR
