Hamilton: EHRs must be secure from start

Friday, January 16, 2009

As the nation considers a broad-reaching health care reform plan, a senior consultant for SC Magazine weighs on the effectiveness of electronic health records (EHRs).

EHRs has become one of the main elements to President-elect Barack Obama's proposed health care plan and promises to save the country a significant amount of money by modernizing the health industry.

Keith Hamilton of SC Magazine said that implementing an EHR system, or any other networked system, without any consideration to security controls can potentially be more costly than some may realize.

"In the end, loss of reputation and patient confidence will be the greatest expense," writes Hamilton for the security news provider.

This thinking holds true for network security at SMBs as well, which are frequent targets of cybercriminals. Hamilton said taking a "top-down approach" can provide a solid foundation for security, as well as conducting a risk analysis to determine where vulnerabilities may lie.

Hamilton also stated that "a good security program begins by addressing the fundamentals of information security." Many SMBs have found employing a strong email archiving system helps secure the organization's information, but allows employees to access the information quicker when compared to businesses with no archiving system in place.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18977818-ADNFCR
