Firms failing on data security disclosure

Friday, September 26, 2008

Many businesses are failing to inform their clients and customers of breaches of data security, according to a new report.

Cited by cio.com.au, the study shows that 60 per cent of businesses who experienced a data breach neglected to tell customers, while more than half did not disclose details of the compromise to the police.

Meanwhile, 57 per cent said they had "no idea" what kind of effect a data security breach would have on their enterprise.

Network security expert Tim Best, warned: "Only through mandatory reporting will the scale of the problem be understood, which will lead to the correct solutions being applied."

Further findings showed that 70 per cent of organizations do not actively train their staff in how to secure themselves against identity theft and fraud.

Elsewhere, Infoworld.com has noted that databases are quickly becoming the primary target in malicious attacks against business organizations.

Researchers have called upon enterprises to implement more robust data security strategies to tackle the emerging threat.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18799180-ADNFCR
