College upgrades security against botnets, malware
Wednesday, December 24, 2008
The University of Miami has upgraded the school's intrusion prevention solution (IPS) in preemptive strike against would-be cybercriminals, instead of waiting for a cyberattack to hit them first.
Vijay A Haripal, the school's information security manager, noticed hackers were focusing more on applications within operating systems, which inspired the upgrade in security, SCMagazineus.com reports.
With Haripal's urging, the school replaced its outdated IPS to a third-generation, purpose-built IPS appliance, according to the article.
"We realized that there were fundamental issues with relying too heavily on signature-based protection for our network," Haripal told the website.
By implementing a tighter security system, the school is saving time and money if an attack were to ever penetrate the system.
While this is good advice for SMBs, a frequent target of cybercriminals, they may also want to employ an extra level of security in email archiving, which allows for virtual storage as well as fast retrieval of important messages.
SMBs who do not adequately prepare for an attack in network security and employee training, may potentially spend a significant amount in the recovery process, as well as the business losing public trust.
