As more firms look to virtual server solutions, it is important not to neglect commitments to network security, CIO claims.

The magazine has warned that while virtualization can bring significant cost savings, as well as improved disaster recovery options, it is important to make sure that robust network security checks are carried out during the migration to offsite hosting.

Contributor Ryan Sherstobitoff warned that doing so is particularly important now because computer crime has left the world of infamy and peer group respect and is now a highly prolific profit generator.

Indeed, research cited by the publication showed that there are more than 5,000 new and unique malware programs launched on the internet on a daily basis, with many of these designed to aid criminals in committing identity theft and fraud.

Meanwhile, eweek.com has reminded businesses that with the proliferation of systems beyond physical server boundaries, network security threats can increase significantly both in scope and in number.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18781872-ADNFCR
