Data centers alerted to outage risk
Wednesday, November 26, 2008
Energy shortages could be on the cards for data centers in the near future, reports SC Magazine.
Disruptions could be expected to email archiving or online backup processes should storage facilities be inaccessible.
But a CapGemini report cited by the publication notes that the supply of power to data centers is currently at a 20-year low, leaving many susceptible to brown-outs.
Large data centers are said to be particularly at risk should the main supply be insufficient to meet their demands.
As such, companies are being told to take power into account when preparing business continuity or disaster recovery plans.
Meanwhile, SC Magazine claims that the data center industry as a whole is no closer to balancing the growing demand for email archiving or file storage services with a desire to lower carbon emissions.
InformationWeek previously reported that the growth in email archiving demand is being driven by a desire to meet e-retrieval regulatory requirements.
