Asus recalls PCs due to virus

Friday, October 17, 2008

Asus has been forced to recall a batch of its Eee Box PCs in Japan after it emerged that the devices had been preloaded with a virus.

ChinaTechNews.com noted that the PCs came with a program called recycled.exe which, once launched, would replicate itself on other disks and devices, slowing down system performance and potentially exposing the system to a host of other web security threats.

Li Yusheng, a representative from ASUS's public relations department, told the website that the problem was limited to Japanese versions of the product as it was planted on machines while the country-specific settings were being downloaded.

Antivirus protection on all other production lines were said to be secure and no further risk was present for users in other countries.

Of a shipment of 4,500, it is estimated that around 300 will need to be recalled.

Earlier this year, Cnet warned that a number of electronic gadgets manufactured in China had been preloaded with viruses, in most cases due to poor quality control standards.ADNFCR-1765-ID-18831808-ADNFCR
